DIY...what technique of painting is this, please help?

Paint a base coat with a white satin latex.Sandpaper scuff the peice where you would want stain to grab onto. Buy a water based stain in the color you like, dip a soft cloth into the stain, and rub it over the paint the way you want it to look. Experiment a bit with letting the stain sit for a couple minutes then rubbing it off. Let all that dry. If you want that crackle look only apply it where you want the crackly part to show.
