How do i get the vines/weeds out of my yard?

my husband says we need a power broom but we cant afford it, there is vines/weeds growing everywhere and its hard to rake and stuff because they are so tangled up, how do we get them up without getting on our knees and pulling eachone up or spending 500 dollars?
