Is there any way to make Virtual Villagers work faster?

Moving my computer clock forward doesn't work. Also, I don't think the game keeps going when it's closed because overnight the villagers didn't get but like 2% on clearing the blockage from the lagoon... this is taking forever! Even when I have the game open it's like 1% every ten minutes! Does it usually take this long? And how long is one year?
